Horne stated:
“There are still a lot of uncertainties, and estimates are dangerous. However, some school districts have overreacted, and are planning to send out notices for layoffs of teachers based on assumed 60 percent budget cuts, which are way out of proportion to anything that can be reasonably anticipated. These excessive layoff notices can create unnecessary panic and consternation, and can adversely affect the quality of education by damaging the morale of teachers who, in the final analysis, would not lose their jobs. It is therefore important, that even though there is uncertainty, the schools have an idea of the proportion of cuts to be anticipated.”
(This advice might have been more beneficial given sooner, as the AIMS tests were held yesterday.)

i've been freaking out because my daughters school is going to either cut kindergarten to half day OR make us pay for all day kindergarten. my hubby said this the other day "don't worry, they're not gonna cut anything, they're just being cautious... just in case"
UM, who do i believe? no one knows what will happen. i guess i'll just hope for the best, i just hate that it is about my child's education.
I have friends that are AZ teachers. I hope they are reading this. I will forward to them. thanks.
We have already instituted the Pay all day kindergarten. I thought of it as cheaper than preschool so, that made sense for us =) The cuts are crazy! Our teachers have to be the last to cut!
this is just so sad. with all the wasteful spending that this is where the pressure is being felt.
maybe all that returned aig money should go to pay teacher's salaries!
It seems that the school system is always crying poor during slow times and always crying for more tax money during good times.
