So wrong on so many levels. UNTHINKABLE. You don't throw you kids away - whether you gave birth to them or adopted them. Your kids are your kids. It will be an even bigger tragedy if they halt all adoptions coming out of Russia. Terrible.
As the "Nightline" piece illustrates, this problem goes beyond a mother returning a child like damaged goods. It is the adoption system of a country that doesn't realize it has a problem with passing off severely developmentally challenged kids to people who don't realize what kind of a child they're getting. I want to know what Russian agencies are doing to solve the problem.
I think there needs to be more education for the prospective parents of foreign adoptive children and they need to have full disclosure of what these kids have been through. They can then make a measured and rational decision as to whether they are the right kind of parents for these children. Not being given full disclosure before adoption is just as criminal as turning a child back after finding out about severe mental problems.
